According to the legends, the name Kedar derived from Satya-yuga king Maharaja Kedar. He had a daughter Vrinda; the Hindu devotees believe she was a partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi Devi. The sacred place also had a connection with the Hindu epic Mahabharata. In Mahabharata, Pandavas killed Kauravas in the Kurukshetra battle. They had a victory, but their hearts were guilt-ridden for killing their brothers. So they wanted to remove their sins by worshipping Lord Shiva. So they went to Kedarnath to worship Lord Shiva for redemption. Hence Lord Shiva disappeared from there. Then the Pandavas realized that Lord Shiva was hiding from them, so they searched for him around the Himalayas and reached Gaurikund.

The Legends of Kedarnath Temple:

There they saw a bull with unique features. Then Bhima, the strongest among the Pandavas, returned to the Bull to catch and tie. The Bull observed the arrival of Bhima and started to Jump upon him. At the sudden incident, Bhima captures the Bull and hits it on its back. There was a fierce war ensured. After some time, a holy Jyotirlinga appeared from the hind parts of the Bull and showed as Lord Shiva to the Pandavas. The Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva with the utmost respect; the pleased Lord Shiva absolved the Pandavas of their sins.

Since then, the devotees believed that the back part of Shiva lay in Kedarnath as Kedareswara. The Pandavas constructed the Kedar Temple at the place. This temple was constructed nearly 1000 years before the present day. Later in the 8th century, the famous Hindu Philosopher Shri Shankaracharya built the temple near the old temple. There is also another legend that once Nara and Narayana, the two incarnations of Lord Vishnu, practised severe penances here for the appearance of Lord Shiva. The appeased Lord Shiva appeared before them. Then the two Nara and Narayana requested Lord Shiva to take up the place of a permanent abode in the form of Jyotirlingam to absolve the sins of the people around the world.
