Engagement Ceremony

Nowadays, the Engagement ceremony has become very popular. It is celebrated with great pomp in every religion. The engagement ceremony is a pre-wedding ceremony; according to Hindu tradition and culture, the engagement ceremony has not had a particular place. In ancient times, there were some restrictions on meeting men and women before their marriage. Celebrations have become very popular in modern times, and every family celebrates this occasion with holy respect. However, the participation of Hindu couples in this tradition is not mandatory but a matter of personal beliefs and preferences. Some families celebrate the ceremony as an elaborate and ritual-rich celebration. Some families celebrate with small and intimate gatherings and celebrating with family members and friends.

Ritual of Lagna Patrika

When the couple is interested in their marriage with each other, the bridegroom’s father approaches the bride’s father and discusses the marriage affairs. At first, they want to celebrate the ritual of ‘Wagdanam’. In this ritual, the head of the family accepts the celebration of the marriage. Later on an auspicious day, they celebrate ‘Lagna Patrika’. At this ceremony, all the family members and the couple participate. On the occasion of the ‘Lagna Patrika, the date was also announced for the marriage celebration. The two engagement considers the announcement of the wedding day. The family members celebrate some pre-wedding ceremonies a few days before the wedding.

Ritual of Graha Shanthi

The first one is ‘Graha Shanthi’. This ritual purifies the bride and bridegroom. The occasion begins with ‘Haladi’. In this ritual, the bride and groom are applied fragrant oils and haldi. The members celebrate ‘Muhurtamedha’ in this ritual and declare about the wedding. Later the priest lets the couple perform the Puja of ‘Sankalpa’, which blesses the bride and groom for their fruitful future.

Pujas

Puja is a religious activity of the Hindus, and they perform every devotional and cultural activity. The ritual was performed in praise of deities. The priest conducts the Puja in pre-marriage ceremonies, and both families attend and exchange gifts before the marriage. The priest leads numerous Pujas; every Puja has its meaning and purpose. After completing all the rituals, the head of the family announces the couple’s Bride and Bridegroom.
