Golconda Fort:

Golconda Fort has a vast history and acquired an essential role in Indian History. The name Golconda originated from the Telugu language. The two words ‘Golla’ and ‘Konda’, which means ‘Shepherd’s hill, two Telugu words joined in later years and called Golconda. Like this, the name Golconda came to the Fort.

First, the Kakatiya rulers built the Fort in 1143 AD. But in 1364 AD, Bahamani sultans seized the Fort and merged it into their kingdom. Later in 1507 AD, Quli Qutub Shahi fortified the Fort and modified the Golconda fort as a structure for defence. Golconda Fort lies on the Western outskirts of Hyderabad city. We can see majestic and imposing monuments in Hyderabad. Hyderabad has 400 years of rich cultural heritage. Golconda Fort was famous for its Diamonds; Darya-e-nur means ‘Sea of Light’, measuring 185 carats. Diamond was mined in Golconda. This Diamond is now in Iran. People Believe that the renowned diamonds Hope Diamond and Regent Diamonds have also been unearthed here.

Story Behind Golconda Fort:

There is an interesting story behind the construction of ‘Golla Konda’. One fine morning a Shepherded boy came to the Rocky hill called “mangalavaram’ to graze sheep. While he was looking after the sheep, he came across an Idol. Then the boy conveyed the news to the Kakatiya ruler. The king visits the holy place and is immersed in devotion. Later he ordered his choristers to construct a mud fort around the sacred spot. After a few years, Qutb Shahi kings came to power and wanted to expand the lowly constructed Fort into a massive Fort with granite. Thus Golconda fort stands silently witness to many historical events.

The glory of Golconda Fort:

At first, Golconda was a small and lower constructed Fort. But in sequence years, it changed into a gigantic fort ever. Many dynasties ruled Golconda; most rulers had prioritised the Fort for their Administration and protection. In 1518 AD Qutb Shahi founded the Qutb Shahi dynasty and made Golconda their capital. The successive rulers also gave the most importance to Golconda Fort and formed a beautiful city.
Golconda’s glory increased daily, and by the 17th century, Golconda became famous for the Diamond market. Many traders from Iran, Afghanistan, and other destinations visit Golconda and trade diamonds, valuable gems, and pearls. Golconda produced best-known diamonds like Kohi Noor, the hope Diamonds, and Catherine Diamond.

The architecture of Golconda Fort:

The inner side of the Fort was once covered with sprawling lawns and playing fountains. Now they remained as fading. The Architecture of the defence looks pretty splendid, with marvellous designs. Now they are ruined and remain destroyed. Which still speaks volumes of the Shahi dynasty and their glorious achievements?
The Architecture of the Fort and the ventilations’ designs reveal the architects’ thoughtful planning. Especially the creation of the ventilation allows the fresh cool breeze to avoid the summer heat. Another fantastic feat in Fort is one who made a hand clap below the dome at the entrance, reverberating and can be heard clearly at the Ball Hissar, the highest point of the Fort. There are two separate pavilions to enter Golconda Fort. We can still see the Taramathi and Premamathi buildings at the entrance of the Fort, who were the famous dancers in that period.
