Surat City is Famous as Diamond City

Surat city is an important industrial hub and commercial centre in the Indian state of Gujarat. The city is previously known as Suryapur. Surat’s History is also mentioned in Mahabharata and Ramayana. Usually, Lord Krishna stopped in the city on His way from Mathura to Dwaraka. Now the city has become a great trading centre on the Indian map. The great China Explorer Hiuen Tsang also described the city as Sowrata and referred to the town as a significant business arena on the shore of the Arabian Sea.

The presence of the city was mentioned in the 6th century A.D. Western Chalukyas conquered this place in 610 AD, and Hindu rulers controlled the area up to the 12th century. During the 12th century, Persian and Arab writers didn’t mention the city’s name. But the Indian scholars in those days called the place Suryapur, and the modern Surat was supposed to be built on the site of old Suryapur. But the glory of Surat City came into existence only after the Portuguese raided this city and settled for trading in the 16th century.

The place became actual trading to European countries up to the 18th century. The city burned in 1512 and rebuilt in 1546 A.D. In 1559 A.D., the great Mughal emperor Akbar marched on the town; however, in 1572 A.D., Mirza, the great rebellion against Akbar, occupied the town. Finally, the city came under the control of the Mughal Emperor. During the region of Mughal rulers, the city played peace and prosperity among the people.
