Chandni Chowk is, also called Moonlight Square, one of the oldest markets in India and located in Old Delhi. The Market was designed by Princess Jahanara Begum, the favourite daughter of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and built in the 17th century AD. The market bazaar is square with a pool in the centre of the market complex. In the olden days, the complex contained 1560 shops and seemed wide and long. In the beginning, the shops were built in a half-moon pattern; in later years, Chandni Chowk lost its shape due to the remaining space being occupied by many conditions. During the Mughal rule, the Market was famous for silver marketing and as a place to buy valuable gems.

Many European merchants visit the Market to buy Silver and valuable Diamonds. In the Hindi language, the silver is called Chandi, so the Market was famous as Chandni Chowk.

Chandni Chowk Market After the Mughals

After Emperor Shah Jahan, other Mughal emperors supported the Market to continue its fame worldwide. In 1863 British India constructed the Delhi Town Hall near Chandni Chowk. In 1950, a clock tower replaced the pool in the centre of the Market. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Market was partially demolished and went into gloom for a few years.
