Acharya Nagarjuna, The Teacher of Buddhism

Acharya Nagarjuna Biography:

Acharya Nagarjuna was a famous Indian philosopher, mathematician and alchemist. He was a follower of Buddhism and intensely studied the Buddha’s preachers and understood the concepts of Buddism scriptures. He was born in the Vidarbha region, the present Andhra Pradesh, during the 2nd century AD. There are some contradictions in the lifetime of Acharya Nagarjuna. But most Historians believe he lived during the second or third century AD. He was born into a Brahmin family, and since childhood, he moved as a brilliant boy. He was a great philosopher and the leader of spiritual insights. Even at a very early age, Acharya Nagarjuna propounded the Madhyamika philosophy, which shows the concept of the ‘Middle Path’ and can understand everyone in society. He also discussed with the scholars and brought about the idea of Sunyata or Emptiness.

Early Days:

As a young boy, Acharya Nagarjuna studied the concept of Hindu scriptures Vedas, the Hindu Sage’s thoughts on Science and magic. Acharya Nagarjuna gained good abilities to perform magic during his teenage. One day he and his two friends invisibly entered the royal palace of the local king with magical powers. They roamed the castle, took advantage of the court, and escaped daily. Once on the attempt to leave, one of his friends forgets to keep the magical powers and is caught by the soldiers and executed. Fortunately, Acharya Nagarjuna escaped, and this incident made Acharya Nagarjuna conquer their desires; from then, he became a great scholar of all time.

As Buddhist Monk

Buddhism seemed an excellent path whenever Acharya Nagarjuna wanted to conquer their desires. So he entered a Buddhist monastery. He studied the entire writing of Buddhism in only ninety days. During his studies, the concept of Buddhism attracted him more, and the path of Buddhism only can remove him from his desires. Acharya Nagarjuna wanted to know more advanced teachings of Lord Buddha and also believed that Buddha must exist somewhere. Whenever the thoughts arose, he left the monastery and searched for Buddha. One day he saw a group of people who listened to the doctrine of the Buddha. Then suddenly, Acharya Nagarjuna noticed that two of the listeners had disappeared into the ground.

Nagas:

Acharya Nagarjuna followed them and found that they were the Nagas, who were half-divine serpent-like beings. The Nagas presented him with several teachings of Lord Buddha, several volumes of the sutra narrating about the Perfection of Wisdom and canonical scriptures. Lord Buddha preserved these teachings, which were helpful for future generations, whenever they acquired spiritual development and the necessity of sophistication. Nagas believed that Nagarjuna was the perfect man and could attain the knowledge of Buddha’s teachings and spread the concept of Buddha’s final teachings among the people.
