Kapil Dev was born on 12 January 1959. His father Ram Lal Nikhanj and mother Lajwanti. He has seven siblings in the family. His forefather migrated from a village in Pakistan during the Partition of India after Independence and settled in Chandigarh. His father, Lal Nikhanj, started building and timber business in Chandigarh. Kapil Dev was a student at D.A.V. College and started playing cricket there. He was introduced to Romi Bhatia through a mutual friend in 1979; in sequence, he married Romi in 1980. They have a daughter Amiya Dev who was born in 1996.
