Raja Ram Mohan Roy Biography
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a famous social reformer and known as the ‘Maker of Modern India’. During the socio-religious reform movements, he founded ‘Brahmo-Samaj’ and famous as a great scholar and brilliant thinker. Due to his efforts, Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah had given him the title of ‘Raja’. During the socio-religious reform movement, the ‘Brahmo Samaj’ played to bring the social reforms and aware the people on religious dogmas. Even, he published the first book ‘Tofat-ul-Mohiddin in 1803, which criticized idol worship. Raja Ram Mohan always question political discrimination and opposed the Bengal Zamindars’ powers. He fought opposite to the British trading rights and settled in Kolkata in 1814.
He born on May 22, 1772, in Radhanagar, West Bengal. His father Ramkanto Roy and mother Tarini. Ramkanto Roy had Vaishnavite and mother Shaivite background. Even though they taught religious uniformity to Ram Mohan Roy, this made him religious tolerance. In the beginning, he studied the primary education in a local school. At the very early age of 15, he had learned Sanskrit, Arabic, Bangla and Persian languages. Learning many languages at very early age made him a brilliant student in the village. From the childhood days, he wanted to bring the reforms of the blind faiths in Hindu Religion.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sati
He rejected the caste divisions among the people and agitated very strongly against the inhuman custom of women becoming Sati. Therefore the Hindu orthodox families petitioned in British Parliament to approve the hold of Sati against the Ban of Sati by William Bentinck. Then Raja Ram Mohan Roy also kept the counter-petition in favor of Bentinck’s action. During his life period, he fights for women’s rights and encouraged widow’s remarriage. This fight also famous as Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sati. As a result, a huge impact fell on the Indian society to change the lives of women. He founded Atmiya Sabha in 1815 and the members meet weekly and discussed the Hindu principles. Later in 1828, Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the ‘Brahmo Samaj’, which made lot of efforts to enlight the real concept of religion among the people.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy Achievements
In Hinduism people believe in superstitions, they move very blindly in their daily lives. The Roy tried to change the attitude of the Hindu people. He opposed the worshiping of Idol Gods and meaningless religious rituals. Raja Ram exhorted Hindus that all religious books of Hinduism preached worship of one God. The reformer not only opposed the rational approach of Hindus but also the Christianity. He also didn’t accept the blindfolded beliefs of Christianity. Raja Ram Mohan Roy established many libraries to bring the awareness about the society and various social issues to the students. He worked with the British officials to bring the reforms in the Academies in college level.
In the Modern Indian History, He tried to bring the reforms in Education. He intended that the modern education could change the entire attitude of Hindu society. So he co-operated to David Hare who tried to introduce the Western Education system in India. In the later years, he founded famous Hindu College at Kolkata. He maintained first English School in Kolkata with his own cost of money. Roy interested to know the international events. Raja Ram always openly talks his opinions on liberty, democracy and nationalism, injustice and oppression are in any form. In those days all people and respective dignities respect his attitude and opinions.
